As Duke Is Hosting Arizona State For Brotherhood Run Sunday Night In Durham Former Duke Guards, Former Duke Players Bobby Hurley, Jon Scheyer Are Opposing Each Other As Head Coaches

As a player for Duke,
Bobby Hurley was a first-team All-American in 1993, he is best remembered for arguably being the best point guard in NCAA history. Hurley led the Blue Devils to three Final Four appearances and consecutive national championships in 1991 and 1992, and set the NCAA record for career assists with 1,076 before was selected seventh in 1993 by the Sacramento Kings and played five years in the NBA with the Kings and Vancouver Grizzles.

As a player for Duke,

Jon Scheyer was one of the most versatile and reliable Blue Devils all-time, concluding his career as the only player in school history to record at least 2,000 points, 500 rebounds, 400 assists, 250 three-point field goals and 200 steals. He averaged 14.4 points per game while scoring in double figures 114 times (sixth-most in Duke history) and leading the Blue Devils to a 115-29 (.799) record.

A two-time team captain, Jon Scheyer scored 2,077-career points and still ranks 10th on Duke’s all-time scoring list. He ranks third in Duke history in free throws made (608), fourth in free throw percentage (.861; 10th in ACC history) and three-point field goals made (297; 13th in ACC history) and sixth in free throw attempts (706). He played in 144 consecutive games, tied for the second-longest streak in Duke history, while his 4,459 minutes played rank fourth in ACC history.

As a senior in 2010,

Jon Scheyer averaged 18.2 points, 4.9 assists and 1.6 steals per game from the point guard position to spark Duke to a 35-5 record and its fourth national championship. He was a consensus second-team All-American and a first-team All-ACC pick in his final season after starting all 40 contests and scoring in double figures in all but two games on the year. His 1,470 minutes played as a senior remains the ACC single-season record.

Jon Scheyer was named MVP of the ACC Tournament as a junior in 2009, averaging 21.7 points and 4.0 rebounds as Duke took home the title.

Though, unlike Bobby Hurley Jon Scheyer ‘s NBA Career was short lived as Jon Scheyer suffered, sustained an eye injury while playing summer league for the Miami Heat as he suffered a retinal tear and traumatic optic nerve avulsion, both vision-threatening injuries. His plans quickly changed as he was told he may not be able to play basketball again due to permanent vision loss in his right eye. Scheyer discusses his experience during that time and expresses his gratitude towards Terry Kim, MD, Duke Cornea Division Chief and Duke Men's Basketball team eye doctor who flew to Chicago the very next day to ensure that he would receive the best care possible. "If that is not an example of Duke being a life-time decision, then I don't know what is,"  said Scheyer. While his plans changed, he was able to get into coaching at a young age and gain the experience that led him to his new role as the 20th Head Coach for Duke Men's Basketball.

Man to have Bobby Hurley come back to Cameron first time in 31 years . So for me , I’m an older guy now , so those guys are older older you know, Grant and Laettner But those used to come back to play with us when we was in school , play pickup And we didn’t have the practice facility so it was a big camera and if camera was we had to go to the car , the dungeon the dungeon the dungeon the dungeon no way. See , those guys coming back really helped us . They would teach us the game , you know , teach us the game . And I remember playing , playing against Bobby in those pick ups , playing with him. He was an all time great here. But three final fours, two national championships . He had an unbelievable career here , man And when he comes , It’s going to be a a lot of people come to the game , exhibition game but a lot of people are coming back to see him so it’s good to have him back first time back.

Ahead of The Brotherhood Run Bobby Hurley shared his thoughts by saying I'm grateful to Jon Scheyer and Duke Basketball for working with Arizona State Basketball to make this exhibition game a reality," Hurley remarked. "It will be special for me to return to Cameron Indoor. Our team is excited for the opportunity to compete against a storied basketball program prior to embarking on our regular season schedule. The collaboration between Duke and Arizona State to put together this charity exhibition game supporting Duke Children's Hospital is very meaningful to both programs."

It means a lot just to have my kids here, my granddaughter here,”“I think it’s a great thing,

It’s great for the Duke Children’s Hospital, and I think it’s great for our team to get a chance to see a team like Duke.”This means a lot,”I appreciate Jon and the Duke program for doing this, because for me, it’s a way to…I didn’t need closure. I think the way I left, it was pretty good. But it’s just, like, a another taste, another way to kind of say goodbye.”

His 1991 team was the team that won our first national championship, and his 1992 team was the team where I fell in love with Duke and fell in love with college basketball. The records, the national championships and wins speak for themselves, but to me it's the tenacity that he played with, the incredible competitiveness and toughness, and coming through in the big-time moments. It's an honor to play this game and celebrate Bobby at Duke. It's also a great opportunity for both teams to compete at a high level before the season starts."

Duke has a game under their belt already this season as they played an exhibition on Saturday October 19, 2024 when they beat Lincoln (PA ) 107-56.

Cooper Flagg, Kon Knueppel, Tyrese Proctor scored 22, 17, 19 points in exhibition game!

As Cooper Flagg, Kon Knueppel , Tyrese Proctor scored 22 points, 17 points, 19 beats Duke beat Lincoln (PA) 107-56 Saturday in Durham as exhibition play got underway.

Following Cooper Flagg, Kon Knueppel, Tyrese Proctor scored 22, 17, 19 points in exhibition game freshman wing Cooper Flagg had this to say about his overall experience of the game about his freshman teammate Kon Knueppel second half Dunk!

It felt great, an incredible atmosphere. It was amazing to be out there and play and have fun. It was a great opportunity to come out and that was an incredible play. I don’t think people realize how bouncy Kon is. It was a great dunk.

play somebody else. We’ve been practicing for a long time now, so [it was] a great opportunity to go out and compete against a team that

has pretty much everybody back from last year. So, it was a really good team, really skilled, quick, so it was a good test to just come out and

play against somebody that knew what they were doing, and was really well-setup and well-coached. I thought we did well. Obviously,

there’s a lot to work on – this was the first game. We’ll be able to look back on it and take a lot from it.”

“It was incredibly special. It’s something I’ve dreamed about since I was young, playing college basketball, and I dreamed about playing at

Duke as well. So just getting that experience, the first time playing against a real opponent, it was kind of surreal.

Following Cooper Flagg, Kon Knueppel, Tyrese Proctor scored 22, 17, 19 points in exhibition game junior guard Tyrese Proctor had this to say about on what an exhibition game like this to help Duke improve on not starting the exhibition game about Kon Knueppel about coming off the bench instead of starting!

We’ve got a good group. We’re just competing every day and that’s that. I don’t know [who’s going to start going forward]. I’m not phased

by it. All the guys, we’re not phased by it. We just want to win and that’s the main thing.

We’re a deep team this year. We’re going to have bodies and we’re going to be able to rotate quicker. When you come in, you give your percent, and you can come out and get a quick breather. We’re picking up full court and playing that old Duke basketball and trying to ramp the offense up, getting stops, just making them overthink. The offense will take care of itself. We’ve just got to keep being competitive on

Kon works his butt off every day. It’s always good seeing the ball go through. He competes at such a high level.”

“I came into Duke being a great shooter, and I obviously haven’t, you know, lived up to that yet,” he said earlier this month. “I’ve shown flashes of it, for sure, and had games. But I feel like just being consistent with it this year is going to be a big thing for me. Being able to make open shots, knocking down open shots. Being able to have the ball in my hand in the game and making the right plays.”

Following Cooper Flagg, Kon Knueppel, Tyrese Proctor scored 22, 17, 19 points in exhibition game Duke Head Coach Jon Scheyer had this to say about Cooper Flagg about Kon Knueppel!

He’s a natural, and he has great instincts, obviouslyBut with how hard he plays and then you add in his feel, he’s going to make some special plays.”

“Just finding the hot hand,”and Kon’s a good guy to find, of course. I think he’s going to have to work harder and get some of those shots. But again, they were adamant about protecting the paint and taking our drives away. So you have to take what the defense is giving you. I think it’s strength of our team.”
