North Carolina, 24th ranked Michigan are matching up in the ACC- Big Ten Challenge tonight in Chapel Hill.

In that ACC/ Big Ten Challenge game North Carolina lost to Michigan by a score of 84-67!

Charles Matthews had 21 points and seven rebounds, and Zavier Simpson spearheaded another impressive defensive effort by No. 7 Michigan, which rolled to an 84-67 victory over No. 11 North Carolina on Wednesday night.

Jordan Poole scored 15 of his 18 points in the second half for the Wolverines (7-0), who led 39-35 at halftime and then shut down the Tar Heels' fast-paced offense for a while. North Carolina (6-2) came in averaging 96.6 points per game, but Michigan was allowing half that at 48.3. The Tar Heels ended up between those two extremes, but a good deal closer to the lower number.

Michigan outscored North Carolina 34-16 in the first 12:13 of the second half. At times, just getting a shot to the rim felt like an accomplishment for the Tar Heels. An alley-oop dunk by Jon Teske put the Wolverines up 49-39, causing North Carolina to take a timeout. Matthews provided an even more emphatic highlight later on, slamming home an offensive rebound while drawing a foul.

Matthews completed that three-point play to make it 56-42, and then Teske and Matthews blocked shots at the other end. A 3-pointer by Poole made it 63-43.

Michigan led 73-51 before North Carolina went on an 11-0 run. Matthews halted that with a 3-pointer.

North Carolina was sharp offensively early, taking a 21-11 lead, but Michigan responded with a 19-4 run that included 10 points by Iggy Brazdeikis. Michigan closed the half on a bright note as well. Matthews sank a 3-pointer, then the 7-foot-1 Teske dove on the floor to secure a loose ball, helping set up a 3 by Poole in the final seconds.

In that game Michigan won by a score of 84-67!

Michigan forced North Carolina into 10 turnovers which led to 18 points, and the Wolverines blocked six shots on the night.

Freshman Ignas Brazdeikis scored a career-high 24 points for his third straight 20-point performance, while senior Charles Matthews added 21 points. Sophomore Jordan Poole poured in 18 points, 15 of which came courtesy of 5-of-8 shooting from beyond the arc.

Junior Zavier Simpson controlled the pace of the game at the point with six assists and collected five points and four rebounds. Junior Jon Teske led the Wolverines defensively with a career-high five blocks and added one steal. Matthews led U-M on the boards with seven rebounds.

The Tar Heels got off to a fast start, scoring on four of their first five possessions to jump out to an 8-4 lead over the Wolverines to open the contest. With 11:15 left in the first half, Simpson came up with a steal and layup that snapped an 8-0 North Carolina run, but the Wolverines still trailed, 21-13.

Coming out of the second media timeout of the half, Brazdeikis sparked the Wolverine offense. He converted an and-one opportunity that was followed by six straight Michigan baskets as U-M went on a 17-2 run to go up 28-25 with just over eight minutes to play.

The Tar Heels took back the lead in the closing minutes of the opening half when Coby White was able to connect on three straight field goals, which helped North Carolina to a 33-31 edge. Michigan suffered a field-goal drought late in the half, but its defense down the stretch kept the game close before threes from Matthews and Poole sent the Wolverines into the locker room with momentum and a 39-35 advantage.

Michigan's offensive onslaught continued in the second half. Simpson connected with Teske on an alley-oop to cap off a 10-2 Wolverine scoring run that put them ahead by 10 points, 49-39. The U-M defense stood firm in the opening five minutes of the second half, holding North Carolina to 1-of-7 shooting and forcing two turnovers.

A putback, an and-one dunk by Matthews, and blocks from Teske and Matthews riled the Crisler crowd and sparked a 7-0 scoring run that expanded Michigan's lead to 58-42 with 13 minutes to play.

UNC closed the gap on the Wolverines with a 10-0 run, but Michigan continued to maintain a double-digit lead, 73-62, with just under five minutes left in the contest.

North Carolina comes into the ACC/ Big Ten Challenge game with Michigan with a record of 4-2 and is unranked though they beat UNC Asheville their previous game on Tuesday November 23, 2021 in Chapel Hill.

In that game North Carolina won by a score of 72-53!

Armando Bacot scored 22 points

Bacot was 8 of 14 from the floor and grabbed seven rebounds. R.J. Davis added 12 points for North Carolina (4-2), which shot 49% from the floor and made 7 of 14 from long range. Leaky Black added nine points with 11 of North Carolina's 51 rebounds.
North Carolina took the lead for good four minutes into the game and led by as many as 20 in the first half while building a 37-24 halftime lead. A 14-8 surge by the Bulldogs pulled them to 45-38 with 12:38 remaining but they didn't any get closer.

Michigan comes to the game with a record of 4-2!

Caleb Houston Freshman Moussa Diabate added 14 points, while classmate Frankie Collins added six points, and the duo combined for 20 of U-M's 22 bench points. Collins added four assists, and Diabate had seven rebounds.

Sophomore Hunter Dickinson ended the evening with nine points, 10 rebounds, four blocks and three assists.

The Wolverines had to work through a slow start offensively, but were able to put together a 7-0 run over a three-minute span to take a 16-10 lead with just under 10 minutes to play in the first half.

Michigan continued to find its rhythm as the half progressed, making six straight shots as part of a 10-0 run, including back-to-back three-pointers from Collins and Brooks to take a 29-20 advantage with 3:30 left in the opening half.

Brooks led U-M with eight points, while Collins had six points and four assists, and Diabate added six points over the first 20 minutes. Michigan shot 75 percent (12-for-16) and made four three pointers.

The Wolverines opened the second half on an early 9-0 run to go up 40-24 early. Houstan made a pair of free throws to move the U-M lead to double digits and a putback from Diabate with 13:20 remaining pushed the Maize and Blue lead to 47-34.

Michigan closed out the contest on a 10-2 run with four points from Diabate to earn the win.
