Following Duke’s 72-64 loss to Clemson Jon Scheyer who is coaching his inaugural season as Duke Head Coach had this to say for his opening statement. On the offensive struggles in the final minutes of the game. On limiting Hunter Tyson. On what the team will focus on during its week off before Miami game. Great environment. Great opportunity for us and I know clearly it meant a lot to them. They (Clemson) played great. Especially in that second half, I think it came down to them getting in our paint too easily. Back and forth the whole way, I thought it was a great game. Both teams struggled to shoot. Disappointed for our guys, thought we were ready to play, thought we fought, thought we were right there. Just learning how to win, and not going to stop for us. Going to continue to go and learn from this and keep building. But, disappointed, not happy. You have to, been in this as a player, an assistant coach, where you have to learn to hate to lose. That’s where I’m at. Disappointed for our guys and we have to learn and grow. Well, give them credit first of all. They’re really good defensively. They’re physical, their pick-and-roll defense is good as anybody that we’ve played. And it’s, for us, learning how to play through that. You’re going to play really good defenses, and down the stretch, knowing how to manufacture points for each other, it’s not going to be as much on your own getting one. And we’re still learning that. Thought for the first 30, 35 minutes, we did a really good job. Missed some shots, and we have to finish through some contact but it’s just learning how to score together in those situations against really good defense.We felt like he was the key. He’s been playing at as high of a level as anybody in our conference, our league. Other guys stepped up, give [Brevin] Galloway credit, obviously we know who [PJ] Hall is as a player and what he did tonight. But the job Mark Mitchell, really guarded [Tyson] for the most part and I think actually his buckets came, I think one was on [Mitchell], the whole game. Which says a lot about the effort that he had. Pretty sure that’s his low, seven [points], three turnovers. But he’s a really good player, we got lucky, he missed a couple open ones too. But I was happy with our team effort on him.Just building on who we are as a team. We’ve had, we’ll see what Jeremy [Roach’s] status is, first and foremost. Get our guys refreshed. It’s been a grind here for us, so getting a chance to evaluate who we have and health and all that stuff. Clearly, learning from our offense down the stretch is something that I want to build on for us. I thought we had, we have to play to our strengths, we’re an inside-out team, I don’t think that’s any secret. We were 3-of-20 ourselves. But just learning how to play together and execute down the stretch and then of course on our defense, taking away the pain. After watching the film, I may have more for you but off the top of my head, that’s it.

Jon Scheyer who is coaching his inaugural season as Duke Head Coach wasn’t the only one to share his thoughts following Duke’s 72-64 loss to Clemson as freshman forward Kyle Filipowski, Center Ryan Young did as well.
Kyle Filipowski shared his thoughts about what changed in the last five or six minutes saying “I think we just kind of made some careless passes, we weren’t getting any shots off in the last five minutes or so, we were turning the ball over more again. So, I think we’ve got to stay a little more poised in that situation. Not let anything else affect us, everybody take care of the ball, do what we did the whole game. And I think the effort overall too, just with some defensive possessions as well, not getting the loose ball or rebound at the end was kind of killer for us.”
Ryan Young shared his thoughts on what got away from team offensively in the last five minutes of second half. On if he knows what made the last four minutes different.
“I think they were better than us in just about everything in the last four minutes. Offensively, they got to the rim, they got rebounds when they needed to, and they made us take tough shots in the last four, they made all their free throws. I thought we played 36 good minutes of basketball, and the last four, we just didn’t compete as hard as them the last four.Got to go back and watch the film and I’ll have more of an answer. Felt like they did everything right in the last four and we did nothing right. Like I said, I’ve got to go watch it and actually piece it down, but they were aggressive in getting to the rim. It seemed like they were taking a lot of three’s earlier in the game, and the last four both their guards and bigs were getting to the rim. So, that might have been a part of it for sure.
Following Clemson’s 72-64 win over Duke following remaining perfect in Atlantic Coast Conference improving to 7-0 Clemson Head Coach Brad Brownell had this to say for his Opening Statement, On PJ Hall’s performance. On finding a way to win without making a lot of 3 pointers.
“Obviously a great day in Littlejohn. Just so happy for my players. These guys worked so hard and have done it for so long. We didn’t play great tonight and a lot of that is because of Duke. I thought they were very competitive, their size is a major factor in the game, in everything you do defensively, rebounding, trying to score against them. But our guys hung in there. Again, I just keep talking about how I think we’re a true team and I said it on radio, out there on the court, I talk to my guys about -- if you’re going to be good, you’ve got to have a superpower. Maybe it’s defense, shooting, rebounding, hopefully it’s multiple things if you’re really good. And I think our superpower is our camaraderie and our togetherness. And I told our guys that when we got back from France, that the unity, the camaraderie, the genuine care and love for each other is clearly evident. And I think that’s why we’re winning. Why we won. We had great bench play, our guys are genuinely happy for the other guy on the team when he plays well, even if it’s eating into their minutes. I’ve said a lot of times, there’s a lot of teams out there with the same jerseys, guys wearing the same jersey, but there’s not a lot of true teams all the time. IN this climate, in this society right now, with everything going on, it’s probably even more challenging for coaches to create that atmosphere. And I’m just blessed this year to be coaching a group of kids that allow you to coach them and care about each other and have one goal in mind and that’s to do their best for Clemson. IT’s been a great run, we’ve got a long way to go, but I’m extremely proud of them and happy for our fans and our students. I want to thank them for the great turnout. It was awesome and a big factor in the win, no doubt.“I’ve said all year that I think our team and our coaching staff does a good job of, we try to figure out how we’re being played and play accordingly. I talk to my team all the time, ‘you’ve got to make the right play. Read the game, make the right play. Read the game, make the right play’. Some guys are better than others, some teams are better than others. I think we have a team that’s unselfish so they’re willing to do what is necessary to win. If it’s shoot more three’s, if it’s drive it, if it’s post it. We’re unselfish enough that we have a group of guys that like to share the ball. In this game, for part of the game for sure, it was we needed to try and score inside some. And PJ [Hall] was very comfortable in the moment, he was very comfortable in the atmosphere. I think early in the game, I thought my team was a little amped up for most of the first half and I thought we took some ill-advised shots and a couple quick plays, you know the crowd probably bothered us a little bit. But we did settle into the game better. I thought our defense was good for a majority of the game and we were able to win.”“Yeah, good players. Our guys are improving. PJ is obviously, I think, a very talented guy that’s battling back off of two difficult surgeries. Ian Schieffelin and Ben Middlebrooks obviously are the beneficiaries of him not being really out on the floor with us all spring or summer. And even most of the fall. So, those guys got all the reps, right? They’re with the one’s, a lot more is expected of them, probably accelerated their growth. And I think we’re benefiting from some of that with their play right now.

Duke has a week off to prepare for Miami who they will host Saturday in Durham who unlike them has a game to play an Atlantic Coast Conference opponent to play in Syracuse Monday in Coral Gables Florida.
