ALS is a disease that affects Jeff Capel III in a personal way as his father Jeff Capel Jr. who got into the Atlantic Coast Conference as an Assistant Coach at Wake Forest from 1986 -1989 before returning to Fayetteville State as their Head Coach where he won 20 games during his time as Head Coach was diagnosed with ALS in spring 2016 before dying from ALS in November of 2017.
At the time of his teams won 20 games twice during his four seasons and competed in the NCAA Division II tournament.
Then in 1994 Jeff Capel Jr. coached at NC A &T to Mid Eastern Athletic Conference title as well as an NCAA Tournament berth. In 1995 Jeff Capel Jr. left his Head Coaching position at NC A&T became Head Coach of Old Dominion.
There Jeff Capel Jr. coached seven seasons where he won 122 games having three 20 win seasons while leading NC A&T to pair of NCAA Tournament appearances. Following coaching North Carolina A&T Jeff Capel Jr. was Assistant Coach in the NBA for Charlotte from 2004 -2011 before being an Assistant Coach for Philadelphia from 2011-2013.

Today we mourn the passing of an outstanding coach, role model in our sport . Jeff Capel Jr. had such a positive impact on so many people throughout his life . However his greatest living legacies are his sons Jeff III and Jason who have represented their respective institutions and their entire family with dignity and class. All of us associated with Duke Basketball and specifically the Krzyzewski family , offer our deepest condolences to the Capels during this difficult time.
