Following Pittsburgh’s 69-58 loss to Syracuse on Tuesday January 16, 2024 Pittsburgh Head Coach Jeff Capel had this to say for his opening statement had this to say about Blake Hinson’s confidence on playing tougher on getting out of slumps.
First of all, congrats to Syracuse to come on the road and shoot the basketball as well as they did tonight. That was something
they’ve not been doing, especially from the three-point line. But they made them today. I thought we were ready to play. I thought
there were some good things that we did. I thought we generated some really good looks early in the game. But we didn’t make
them and they did. I love my team, I think we’re pressing. I think we’re putting pressure on ourselves. Especially here, because we
have not shot the basketball well. But I do like the shots we were generating. We have to continue to be tougher, to be together,
and to fight through it. We have to figure out a way to cross that bridge and to become the team that we want to be and the team
that we can be.”
I don’t know if the shooting slump affects his confidence. I think what it can do with Blake, is make him press a little more because
there’s no one that wants it more than him for this program. For this city. For this university, and for the student section. He is the
most appreciative and grateful guy.
We have to be tougher. We have to be mentally tougher and we have to be physical. I thought in the first half there were about five
opportunities to dive for a loose ball and we didn’t. That has to become second nature for us. We can’t have guys where one takes a
shot and the rest are running back down the court. Collectively as a group we have to be better, and I have to be better.”
In my experience as a player, a lot of it is the players that did it. I think I played for the best coach ever (Coach K). I was on a team
that went 2-14 in the league and 13-18 the year before we played for the national championship. The next year we started 0-4, and
there wasn’t much that Coach did except believe in us. There was a toughness with our group, and we were not the most talented
group, but we were older. We had been through hard times, and it was just a thing that we had to fight through and get out of.
Coach and the coaching staff believed in us. We finished 8-8 in the league, made the tournament, and won the ACC the next year.
Sometimes you have to go through crap and hard things to learn. We’re going through something really hard right now, so this will
teach us something individually and as a group, because that’s life. We’re going to continue to encourage them, to believe in them,
to tell them the truth, and to teach them. And I do think eventually we’ll figure it out.”
Following Pittsburgh’s 69-58 loss to Syracuse on Tuesday January 16, 2024 freshman Jaland Lowe who was was 8-15 on field goals, 1-2 on 3 pointers to go along with 3 rebounds, 3 assists , 1 steal , 1 block, 20 points had this to say about facing pressure to win games!
We all want to win and that’s just the bottom of it. We just want to win. There’s no pressure from coach because we expect that
from our coach. He’s our example, we know what he’s done in the past. He holds us to a high standard and we just want to go out
and hold that standard for him and for ourselves.
