As a Special Assistant, Assistant Coach, Associate Head Coach at Duke to now retired Head Coach Mike Krzyzewski Jon Scheyer helped spark the Blue Devils to two ACC championships and the 2010 NCAA title as a player from 2007-10, has helped Duke compile a 219-62 (.779) record, a national championship (2015), two Final Fours (2015, 2022) and two ACC Tournament crowns (2017, 2019) during his time as an assistant or associate head coach.He helped mentor Tyus Jones in Duke’s 2015 national title season, as the Blue Devils finished the year ranked third nationally in adjusted offensive efficiency. Jones was named the Final Four Most Outstanding Player in Indianapolis and was a first-round pick in the 2015 NBA Draft after just one college season.

In 2017, Jon Scheyer helped mold Luke Kennard into a consensus All-American after a breakout sophomore season that saw him rank second in the ACC in scoring and three-point field goal percentage. He also helped develop Frank Jackson into one of the most dynamic young guards in the country during the 2016-17 campaign.

Luke Kennard and Frank Jackson were selected 12th and 31st overall, respectively, in the 2017 NBA Draft.

After Grayson Allen finished his career in 2018 as the 12th-leading scorer in Duke history with 1,996 points, he was drafted in the first round by the Utah Jazz. Allen joined Scheyer as two of just five Blue Devils in history with 1,900 or more points, 400 or more rebounds and 400 or more assists (Grant Hill, Danny Ferry, Johnny Dawkins).

The 2019 campaign saw Tyus’ brother Tre enjoy a breakout year as a freshman by setting the program’s single-season record for assist-to-turnover ratio (3.62), while establishing himself as one of the nation’s premier defensive players. Jones’ classmate, RJ Barrett, finished his remarkable freshman season at Duke as a consensus first-team All-American, the USA Today National Player of the Year, and the overall No. 3 selection in the NBA Draft.

R.J. Barrett broke a myriad of program and ACC records, including both the Duke and conference freshman scoring record with 860 points. His 860 points were surpassed on the program’s single-season scoring list by only J.J. Redick’s 964 points as a senior in 2006. Barrett averaged 22.6 points and was the only major conference player in 2018-19 to score 13+ points in every game of the season.

Under Jon Scheyer’s guidance, Tre Jones parlayed his phenomenal freshman season into a decorated sophomore campaign that ended with him as the 2020 ACC Player of the Year, the ACC Defensive Player of the Year, and an All-American. After two seasons as the starting point guard, Jones declared for the NBA Draft, leaving Duke as the program’s career record-holder in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.88) and ranking third in assists per game (5.8).

Throughout the 2021-22 season, Jon Scheyer worked closely with ACC Freshman of the Year and consensus second-team All-American Paolo Banchero. He also helped guide second-team All-ACC pick Wendell Moore Jr., into performing as one of the nation's most complete players. Moore capped his season winning the Julius Erving Award as the nation's best small forward.

Paolo Banchero capped his collegiate career as the overall No. 1 pick in the 2022 NBA Draft by the Orlando Magic, one of a record five Blue Devils drafted in 2022, including four in the first round. Freshman center Kyle Filipowski had this to say for his Opening Statement on what Jon Scheyer said to the team at halftime “I think a big thing was just turnovers in the first half for us. [Reducing the turnovers] gave us a lot more shot attempts in the second half. And also, just our defense – we let up around 40 points in the first half. That wasn’t really our type of defense. I don’t know how [many points] we let up in the second half, but it wasn’t nearly as much. That also turned into offense for us. We were all on the same page tonight and it was a really good win overall.” “We’ve just got to build off this now. We know how great of a team we can be. We know we still have a lot better things to do as well, like take care of the ball a little better, and things like that. This is a just a little sneak peak of the potential we have and how good all of us can be.”

Freshman Dariq Whitehead who unlike his freshman teammates Kyle Filipowski, Tyrese Proctor is a forward had this to say following Duke’s come back win over Pittsburgh for his opening statement, when asked if this game felt like a turning point for this Duke team.

“It’s the first day of class, the Crazies came back, so we fed off that energy and it was huge for us. I honestly feel like they changed the game, really.” “We’ve just got to continue to grow in practice, limit the turnovers. I feel like if we just continue to play as a team and just continue to share the ball, then the sky’s the limit for this team.”It should be a turning point for the team. On the offensive struggles in the final minutes of the game. On limiting Hunter Tyson. On what the team will focus on during its week off before Miami game. Great environment. Great opportunity for us and I know clearly it meant a lot to them. They (Clemson) played great. Especially in that second half, I think it came down to them getting in our paint too easily. Back and forth the whole way, I thought it was a great game. Both teams struggled to shoot. Disappointed for our guys, thought we were ready to play, thought we fought, thought we were right there. Just learning how to win, and not going to stop for us. Going to continue to go and learn from this and keep building. But, disappointed, not happy. You have to, been in this as a player, an assistant coach, where you have to learn to hate to lose. That’s where I’m at. Disappointed for our guys and we have to learn and grow. Well, give them credit first of all. They’re really good defensively. They’re physical, their pick-and-roll defense is good as anybody that we’ve played. And it’s, for us, learning how to play through that. You’re going to play really good defenses, and down the stretch, knowing how to manufacture points for each other, it’s not going to be as much on your own getting one. And we’re still learning that. Thought for the first 30, 35 minutes, we did a really good job. Missed some shots, and we have to finish through some contact but it’s just learning how to score together in those situations against really good defense.We felt like he was the key. He’s been playing at as high of a level as anybody in our conference, our league. Other guys stepped up, give [Brevin] Galloway credit, obviously we know who [PJ] Hall is as a player and what he did tonight. But the job Mark Mitchell, really guarded [Tyson] for the most part and I think actually his buckets came, I think one was on [Mitchell], the whole game. Which says a lot about the effort that he had. Pretty sure that’s his low, seven [points], three turnovers. But he’s a really good player, we got lucky, he missed a couple open ones too. But I was happy with our team effort on him.Just building on who we are as a team. We’ve had, we’ll see what Jeremy [Roach’s] status is, first and foremost. Get our guys refreshed. It’s been a grind here for us, so getting a chance to evaluate who we have and health and all that stuff. Clearly, learning from our offense down the stretch is something that I want to build on for us. I thought we had, we have to play to our strengths, we’re an inside-out team, I don’t think that’s any secret. We were 3-of-20 ourselves. But just learning how to play together and execute down the stretch and then of course on our defense, taking away the pain. After watching the film, I may have more for you but off the top of my head, that’s it.

Kyle Filipowski shared his thoughts about what changed in the last five or six minutes saying “I think we just kind of made some careless passes, we weren’t getting any shots off in the last five minutes or so, we were turning the ball over more again. So, I think we’ve got to stay a little more poised in that situation. Not let anything else affect us, everybody take care of the ball, do what we did the whole game. And I think the effort overall too, just with some defensive possessions as well, not getting the loose ball or rebound at the end was kind of killer for us.”

Ryan Young shared his thoughts on what got away from team offensively in the last five minutes of second half. On if he knows what made the last four minutes different.

“I think they were better than us in just about everything in the last four minutes. Offensively, they got to the rim, they got rebounds when they needed to, and they made us take tough shots in the last four, they made all their free throws. I thought we played 36 good minutes of basketball, and the last four, we just didn’t compete as hard as them the last four.Got to go back and watch the film and I’ll have more of an answer. Felt like they did everything right in the last four and we did nothing right. Like I said, I’ve got to go watch it and actually piece it down, but they were aggressive in getting to the rim. It seemed like they were taking a lot of three’s earlier in the game, and the last four both their guards and bigs were getting to the rim. So, that might have been a part of it for sure.
