As Head Coach of Michigan, In just two seasons with his alma mater, Juwan Howard has mixed strong culture principles with a passion for competing as his Wolverines continued to showcase themselves in the Big Ten, nationally and rewrite history along the way.
In his second season (2020-21), Howard guided the Wolverines to a 23-5 record and a 14-3 Big Ten mark, helping the Maize and Blue claim its 15th conference regular-season title. As a result, U-M earned its second No. 1 seed in the Big Ten Tournament and on Selection Sunday, Howard's Wolverines were named the No. 1 seed in the NCAA East Region -- the program's third No. 1 seed in history, joining the 1985 and 1993 (vacated) teams. Howard also became the first person to earn a No. 1 seed as a player and as a head coach in the NCAA Tournament.
At the 2021 NCAA Tournament, the Wolverines advanced to their fourth straight Sweet 16 after wins over Texas Southern and LSU, and with a victory over Florida State, U-M moved on to its fourth Elite Eight appearance in the last eight tournaments. Ultimately, U-M fell to UCLA in the regional final.
For his efforts this past season, Howard was named the 2021 Associated Press National Coach of the Year -- the Wolverines' second recipient and first since Bill Frieder in 1985. He was the first Big Ten coach to be recognized with the award since 2005 (Bruce Weber, Illinois). The AP honor highlighted a slew of accolades as Howard was the recipient of the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) Henry Iba Award as well being named National Coach of the Year by The Athletic and The Sporting News.
Howard was also named the Big Ten Coach of the Year by his fellow coaches and conference media, as well as by the Associated Press. He was selected as the USBWA's District V Coach of the Year and the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) District 7 Coach of the Year.
Along with his personal honors, Howard guided rookie center Hunter Dickinson to not only consensus All-America second team honors but to the Big Ten Freshman of the Year accolade as well. Dickinson added All-Big Ten first team (media) and second team (coaches) honors and was named to the All-Freshman squad while Isaiah Livers earned a spot on the All-Big Ten second team (coaches and media) and Franz Wagner was a second team (coaches) and third team (media) selection.
In his first season with the Wolverines, Howard began his career winning his first seven games of the 2019-20 season, with spotlight victories over No. 6 North Carolina and No. 8 Gonzaga leading to the Battle 4 Atlantis title, Howard's Wolverines bettered that effort starting the 2020-21 season a perfect 11-0.
