As Duke Host NC State Today In Durham Head Coach Mike Krzyzewski Is Returning To The Sideline

When Duke played on the road at Wake Forest on Wednesday Mike Krzyzewski who is retiring after the season wasn’t on the sideline coaching his team because of a non- covid related virus.

That is is going to change as Duke host NC State today in Durham because Head Coach Mike Krzyzewski is returning to the sideline after being back at work Thursday, Friday and is on track to coach today’s game.

Though, while Mike Krzyzewski was sidelined with a non- covid related virus he had a pretty good replacement in current Associate Head Coach Jon Scheyer who is the future Head Coach Of The Duke Men’s Basketball Program.

Under Jon Scheyer’s direction on Wednesday night in Winston Salem fans, spectators got a glimpse of whats to come when the 2023-2024 season arrives. A reserved coach, a reserved Jon Scheyer! In the process he held down fort for Mike Krzyzewski who is coaching his final season at Duke and helped Duke beat Wake Forest in the process .

In Duke’s 76-64 win over Wake Forest Freshman Paolo Banchero had 24 points and No. 8 Duke hit 13 straight shots to open it up after halftime and beat Wake Forest 76-64 on Wednesday night at LJVM Coliseum.

Fellow freshman AJ Griffin had a season-high 22 points in his first career start to help the Blue Devils (13-2, 3-1 ACC) bounce back from a home loss to Miami on Saturday.

Paolo Banchero and AJ Griffin led the way as Duke suddenly stretched out a two-possession lead in the final minute of the first half, then carried a hot hand into the second that put the Demon Deacons (13-4, 3-3) away for good.

AJ Griffin ended the first half by pump-faking Khadim Sy off his feet and then stepping over to knock down a corner three-pointer just before the horn for the 35-29 lead. The Blue Devils made their last four shots of the first half, then roared out of the break by making their first nine shots.

Alondes Williams scored 25 points for Wake Forest , who had Duke in a tight game coming down the first-half stretch and led 29-27 on Dallas Walton's and-one dunk with 54.1 seconds left. But Wake erased a stretch of quality minutes with a shaky finish that jump started Duke's run.

Duke’s Associate Head Coach , Future Head Coach Jon Scheyer who will become the Head Coach in April 2023 because Mike Krzyzewski is retiring after the season is over had this to say about Duke’s 76-64 over Wake Forest after the game to David Shumate who does play by play for Duke Men’s Basketball games!

NC State comes into the game with a record of 9-8 while they’re 2-4 in the Atlantic Coast Conference and eleventh in the standings because they beat Louisville 79-63 on Wednesday in Louisville Kentucky.

In NC State’s win over Louisville on Wednesday NC State trailed in the second half and pulled away late to defeat Louisville, 79-63.

In NC State’s 79-63 win over Louisville Freshman Terquavion Smith led NC State with 24 points, hitting 9-of-13 field goals, including 6-of-9 from long distance.

Senior Jericole Hellems 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting and 5-of-7 shooting from three-point range. He added a career-high three blocked shots.

Sophomore Dereon Seabron also reached double figures with 15 points and led the team with seven rebounds and five assists.

NC State shot a season-high 56.1 percent from the field in the win.

NC State opened the second half with an 8-0 run to take a 16-point lead, 43-27, and force a Louisville timeout.

Louisville came roaring back, making 10 of its next 11 shots to close within five, 54-49, with 9:02 play.

But Smith had an answer for every Louisville run. He hit a jumper to push the Pack's lead up to seven and then made a three-pointer the next time down to give NC State a 59-50 lead with 8:01 to go.

Louisville cut its deficit to 61-55, but Smith again responded, nailing a three from the corner to push the NC lead back to nine with 5:30 remaining.
NC State led by eight at the final media timeout and it was the senior's turn to take over as Hellems scored the next five points of the game to push NC State's lead out to 13 and effectively end any hopes for a Louisville comeback.

The Pack went on a 16-0 run midway through the first half to turn a three-point deficit into a 13 point lead. Jericole Hellems started the run with a three-pointer and Terquavion Smith buried a three on NC State's next possession to give the Pack a 21-18 lead. Thomas Allen rebounded a Smith miss on the Pack's next possession and laid it in to extend NC State's run. Hellems stole the ball on Louisville's next possession and Dereon Seabron found a streaking Ernest Ross for a lay-up to give NC State a 25-18 lead and force a Cardinals timeout.

After the timeout, Smith buried back-to-back three-pointers to give NC State a 31-18 lead with 5:13 left in the first half.

Louisville ended the half on a 9-4 run to cut its deficit to 35-27 at the break. The eight-point halftime lead for NC State tied for its largest of the season.
